Heat, then snow, then heat again

Every villa has a sauna of its own. No booking slot, no queue, nobody else's timetable — you heat it when you feel like it, at eleven in the morning or at one in the night. The walls are panelled in heat-treated pine, the kind that darkens with age and smells of it, and the tiled washroom is a step away.

The routine is older than any of us: warm through slowly, step out into the snow, stand there long enough to feel foolish, then go back in. Do it twice in an evening and you will sleep like you have not slept in years. It is the one thing guests write about afterwards.

The room

Small, and properly divided

Thirty-one square metres, and five rooms inside them. A living room of eleven metres, a separate bedroom of eight and a half, an entrance hall, a tiled washroom and the sauna.

Puustelli fittings, an oak-toned interior and heated floors you notice the moment the boots come off. The window fills most of one wall with spruce and sky. And there is a washing machine, which sounds dull until you have spent a week in snow gear.

The building

Warm without waste

The frame is solid laminated log, dark stained outside and left as timber inside, under a roof carrying nearly half a metre of insulation. New construction, built for a climate that tests buildings properly.

Solar panels sit on the roof, an air heat pump does the heavy lifting, and mechanical ventilation recovers the heat it would otherwise throw away. Underfloor heating runs quietly beneath all of it, and fibre broadband arrives if you need to stay reachable. Warm without waste, and quiet with it.
